Most of what circulates in India about working in the United Kingdom is out of date, and the parts that are out of date are precisely the parts people act on. The rules changed substantially in 2025 and again in early 2026, and an article written before those changes — or an agent working from one — will send you towards a route that no longer exists.
This article explains the current shape of the main work route, states plainly what it now requires, and tells you where to check the position for your own case.

It is general information, not immigration advice. Immigration rules change frequently and are applied case by case. Always verify the current position on the official UK government website before acting, and consider qualified advice for your own situation.
The core mechanism: sponsorship
The main work route into the UK is the Skilled Worker visa, and everything about it turns on one fact that many applicants do not understand.
Anúncios
You cannot apply for a Skilled Worker visa on your own. You need a UK employer that holds a sponsor licence from the Home Office and is willing to assign you a Certificate of Sponsorship for a specific job.
Already in the UK: Switching, Extending and What to Do If Your Sponsor Fails
Most writing about UK immigration is aimed at people trying to get there. Far less is written for people who are already in the country and…
Read the Guide →That single requirement explains most of the disappointment in this market. An applicant with excellent skills and no sponsoring employer has no route. An agent who promises a visa without naming a sponsoring employer is promising something that does not exist.
So the practical question is never “can I get a UK visa?” It is “which licensed employer will sponsor me for a specific eligible job?”
What the route now requires
Four requirements matter most, and three of them have been tightened recently.
Skill level. Since 22 July 2025 the minimum skill level for the Skilled Worker route is RQF Level 6 — broadly graduate level. This change removed a large number of occupations from eligibility, and it is the single most important thing for an applicant to understand, because most of the job titles circulating in advertisements aimed at overseas candidates sit below it.
Salary. There is a general salary floor, reported at £41,700 per year for the general threshold, and separately a “going rate” for the specific occupation code. An employer must meet whichever is higher. Different rules and lower thresholds can apply to certain categories, and thresholds are revised, so check the current figures on the official guidance rather than relying on any number quoted elsewhere, including here.
English language. From 8 January 2026 the requirement rose from B1 to B2 on the Common European Framework, across reading, writing, speaking and listening. Exemptions exist, including for nationals of majority English-speaking countries and for people with degrees taught in English.
An eligible occupation. The job must be on the list of eligible occupations for the route.
The Temporary Shortage List
Alongside the main route there is a Temporary Shortage List, which allows sponsorship in certain occupations at RQF Levels 3 to 5 — that is, below the general degree-level requirement — in sectors identified as critical.
Two features of it matter enormously to an applicant.
Workers on this list cannot bring dependants. For anyone planning to move with a spouse or children, this is decisive.
It is temporary. The current list has been reported as expiring on 31 December 2026. A route with an expiry date is not a foundation for a long-term plan without understanding what happens at the end of it.
If an occupation you are considering falls on this list, check the current position and the conditions carefully, because both the contents of the list and its duration are subject to change.
Care work: the route closed to overseas applicants
This deserves its own section because it is the single most common subject of fraudulent offers aimed at Indian applicants.
From 22 July 2025, overseas recruitment of care workers through the Skilled Worker route ended. Employers can no longer recruit care workers and senior care workers from abroad through that route.
Limited arrangements continue for people already in the UK in certain circumstances, and existing workers have been able to extend, with reporting indicating extensions running to 22 July 2028. In England, provider requirements including regulatory registration apply.
What this means in practice: if you are in India and someone offers you a UK care worker visa, that offer is not what it claims to be. Care visa fraud was a serious problem while the route was open and has not stopped simply because the route closed. Verify the current position on the official guidance before engaging with any such offer.
The uncomfortable implication for most job titles
Put the skill level and salary requirements together and a conclusion follows that very little content aimed at Indian job seekers states plainly.
Roles such as general warehouse work, cleaning, most hospitality positions, retail assistant work and many driving jobs sit below the current skill threshold for the main route. An overseas applicant cannot generally be sponsored into them.
Advertisements offering these jobs to overseas candidates with visa sponsorship therefore describe something that does not match the rules. Some are simply out of date. Others are deliberate.
This is not a reason for despair; it is a reason to aim accurately. Understanding which routes actually exist is what stops people spending money on ones that do not.
Other routes that exist
The Skilled Worker route is the main one, and it is not the only one. Depending on your circumstances, other routes may be relevant, including student routes and the post-study work arrangements that follow them, routes for specific health and care professionals with the necessary professional registration, routes for people with particular talents or qualifications, and family routes.
Each has its own eligibility, cost and conditions. The correct approach is to look at the official guidance for the routes that could apply to you rather than assuming the Skilled Worker route is the only door.

Read the Guide →How to check whether an employer can actually sponsor you
This is the most useful practical check in this article.
The UK government publishes a register of licensed sponsors — organisations approved to sponsor workers. If an employer is not on it, they cannot sponsor you, whatever they say.
Check it yourself. Do not accept a screenshot, a letter or an assurance. Search the register on the official site, find the organisation, and confirm it holds a licence covering the route in question.
Then ask for the specifics: the exact job title, the occupation code, the salary, and confirmation that a Certificate of Sponsorship will be assigned. A genuine sponsoring employer can answer all of this.
What legitimate recruitment looks like
An employer advertises a role. You apply and are interviewed. The employer decides to sponsor you, assigns a Certificate of Sponsorship, and you then make a visa application yourself, paying the official application fee, the immigration health surcharge and any other prescribed costs directly to the authorities.
Note what is absent: at no point does a candidate pay an individual a large sum in exchange for a job or a visa. Official fees exist and are paid to official bodies. A placement fee paid to an agent for a UK job is a different thing entirely.
Frequently asked questions
Can I come to the UK to look for work? The Skilled Worker route requires a sponsoring employer before you apply. Visiting to seek work is not a route to employment.
Can I be sponsored as a cleaner, warehouse worker or waiter? These occupations generally sit below the current skill threshold for the main route. Check the eligible occupation list rather than relying on an advertisement.
Is the care worker route really closed? Overseas recruitment through the Skilled Worker route ended on 22 July 2025, with limited arrangements continuing for people already in the UK. Verify the current position on the official guidance.
What English test do I need? The requirement rose to B2 from 8 January 2026, with exemptions in defined cases. Check which applies to you.
Can my family come with me? It depends on the route. Notably, workers sponsored under the Temporary Shortage List cannot bring dependants.

The costs, and who they are paid to
Applicants are frequently surprised by the total cost of a UK work move, and that surprise is what agents exploit — a candidate who has not budgeted properly is a candidate who can be persuaded that an unusual payment is normal.
The official costs generally include the visa application fee, the immigration health surcharge covering access to the health service, and, where applicable, costs associated with providing biometrics, document translation and an English language test. Amounts vary by route and length of visa and are revised, so check the current figures on the official guidance.
Two points matter more than the amounts. First, these are paid to official bodies through official channels, not handed to an individual. Second, certain sponsorship-related costs are the employer responsibility under the sponsorship rules, and an employer attempting to recover those from a worker is a matter worth checking rather than accepting.
Budget honestly, including the cost of arriving — accommodation deposits, travel, and living costs before a first salary. A move that only works if everything goes perfectly is a move that will not work.
Why so much bad information circulates
It is worth understanding why this subject is surrounded by more misinformation than almost any other in overseas employment.
The rules changed substantially and recently, in July 2025 and again in January 2026. Content written before those changes reads as authoritative and is simply wrong, and a great deal of it remains online, unrevised, ranking well in search results.
The subject is complicated, involving skill levels, occupation codes, going rates, thresholds and exemptions. Complexity is where misinformation hides, because nobody can hold the whole picture and everybody defers to whoever sounds confident.
And the prize is large, which makes people want to believe.
The defence is not expertise. It is a habit: for any claim about UK immigration, ask where it comes from, then check that specific point on the official government guidance yourself before acting on it. Anything that cannot survive that check should not survive your decision either.
The one thing to take away
There is no UK work visa without a licensed employer willing to sponsor you for an eligible job. Check the sponsor register yourself, check the occupation is eligible at the current skill level, and treat any offer that skips those two facts as something other than a job offer.
