Search for UK jobs from India and you will find a great many advertisements offering visa sponsorship for cleaning, warehouse, hospitality, retail and driving work. Some are years out of date. Some are deliberate. Almost none of them describe something you can actually do.
This article explains why, plainly, and then explains what the honest alternatives are. It is written to save you money rather than to encourage you, because the money at stake in this particular category of fraud is very large.

It is general information, not immigration advice. Rules change and are applied case by case. Verify anything that affects you on the official UK government website.
The rule that rules everything out
Since 22 July 2025, the minimum skill level for the main UK work route, the Skilled Worker visa, has been RQF Level 6 — broadly graduate level. That change removed a large number of occupations from eligibility.

Alongside it sits a salary requirement: a general floor, reported at £41,700 per year, and a “going rate” for the specific occupation, with the employer required to meet whichever is higher.

Read the Guide →Now hold those two facts against the job titles in the advertisements.
General cleaning work. Warehouse operative work. Waiting and kitchen roles in ordinary hospitality. Retail assistant work. Most driving roles. These are not graduate-level occupations, and they do not pay anywhere near the general salary floor.
They therefore cannot generally be sponsored through the main route. Not because employers do not want the workers — many do — but because the immigration rules do not permit it.
So why do the advertisements exist?
Four reasons, and it is worth being able to tell them apart.
They are old. The rules changed in July 2025 and again in January 2026. An enormous amount of content written before that remains online, unrevised, and reads as authoritative. Some agents are working from it in good faith.
They are for people already in the UK. A UK employer advertising a warehouse role is recruiting from people who already have the right to work in the UK — citizens, settled residents, people on other visas with work rights, students within their permitted hours. The advertisement is real. It is simply not aimed at you.
They are fishing. Collecting names, phone numbers and documents from people who respond, for use elsewhere.
They are fraud. The largest category. An offer that leads to a request for a placement fee, a visa processing charge or a payment to secure a Certificate of Sponsorship.
The specific shape of the fraud
UK job fraud aimed at Indian applicants follows a recognisable pattern.
An advertisement or message offers a UK job with visa sponsorship, in an accessible occupation, at a salary that sounds excellent in rupees. Contact follows, sometimes with an interview to make it feel real. Then a document arrives — an offer letter, sometimes something described as a Certificate of Sponsorship — and then the request for money.
The amounts are frequently very large, described as visa processing, sponsorship, legal or agency fees. Families sell assets to pay them.
Two variants deserve particular attention.
The care visa offer. Care work was the most heavily targeted category while the route was open, and overseas recruitment through it closed on 22 July 2025. Offers of UK care worker visas to people in India therefore describe a route that is not available. This has not stopped the offers.
The “sponsorship for sale” offer. Someone offers to sell you a Certificate of Sponsorship. Sponsorship is something an employer assigns for a genuine job. Buying one is not a shortcut into a legitimate arrangement — it is participation in something that can leave you without status and worse.
The two checks that settle almost every case
Check the sponsor register. The UK government publishes a register of organisations licensed to sponsor workers. If the employer is not on it, they cannot sponsor anyone. Search the register yourself on the official site — do not accept a screenshot or a letter.
Check the occupation. Look at the eligible occupation list and the skill and salary requirements for the route. If the job you are being offered is not eligible, no sponsor can sponsor it, however genuine they are.
Between them, these two checks dispose of essentially every fraudulent UK job offer in circulation, and they take a few minutes.
What about the Temporary Shortage List?
There is a route by which some roles below the general skill threshold can be sponsored: a Temporary Shortage List covering certain occupations at RQF Levels 3 to 5 in sectors identified as critical.
Two conditions matter enormously. Workers sponsored under it cannot bring dependants. And the current list has been reported as expiring on 31 December 2026.
If someone tells you an occupation is covered, check the current list yourself rather than accepting the claim, and understand the dependant restriction before making family plans around it.
The honest alternatives
This is the part most articles on this subject leave out, and it is the reason to keep reading.
Qualify into an eligible occupation. The route is open at graduate-level occupations. For a young candidate, the realistic path to the UK runs through a qualification that leads to an eligible profession, not through a warehouse advertisement.
The student route and what follows it. Studying in the UK has its own costs and requirements, and it is a genuine and widely used path, with post-study arrangements that allow a period of work afterwards. It is expensive and it is real, which is more than can be said for a purchased sponsorship.
Professional registration routes. Regulated healthcare professions — nursing and medicine among them — have their own registration requirements with the relevant UK professional body, and those routes exist independently of the general skill threshold discussion. They are demanding and they are legitimate.
Other countries. This is worth saying plainly on a site that also writes about the Gulf. If your qualification is a trade rather than a degree, markets that recruit trades directly are a more realistic proposition than a UK route that does not admit your occupation. That is not a lesser outcome; it is an accurate one.
If you are already in the UK on another visa, your position is different, and in-country switching and extension arrangements may be relevant. Check the guidance for your specific status.

Act quickly and without embarrassment.
Contact your bank immediately and ask about a dispute or recall on the transaction. Speed matters and the window is short.
Report it through the national cybercrime reporting portal and at your local police station, keeping every message, screenshot, receipt and number.
Do not pay anyone who offers to recover your money. That is the second fraud, run on the same list.
If you have already travelled and are in difficulty in the UK, the Indian High Commission assists Indian nationals in distress.
Frequently asked questions
Are all UK job advertisements aimed at overseas candidates fake? No. Genuine sponsored recruitment happens in eligible occupations. The test is whether the employer is on the sponsor register and the occupation is eligible.
Can I come on a visit visa and find work? A visit visa does not permit work, and the Skilled Worker route requires a sponsoring employer before you apply.
Can I buy a Certificate of Sponsorship? No. Sponsorship is assigned by an employer for a genuine job. Attempting to buy one exposes you to serious consequences.
What if an agent shows me a real company name? Company names are easy to borrow. Check the sponsor register yourself, and contact the company through details you find independently.
Is the care worker route coming back? Overseas recruitment through it closed on 22 July 2025. Any change would be announced through official channels — check there rather than believing an agent.

How to read a UK job advertisement properly
A short diagnostic you can run on anything you are sent, before you reply to it.
Is a named employer given? Not “a leading UK company” or a sector description — an actual registered organisation you can look up. No name, no offer.
Is the occupation stated precisely? Genuine sponsored recruitment references a specific job title, and sponsorship works against occupation codes. Vagueness here is the single most common feature of fraudulent advertisements.
Does the salary make sense against the rules? If a role is being offered with sponsorship at a salary well below the thresholds that apply to the route, something is wrong with the offer regardless of how attractive the figure looks converted into rupees.
How do you apply? A genuine employer directs you to its own application process. A phone number, a personal messaging account or an agent as the only route is a warning.
Is anyone asking for money? Official fees are paid to official bodies. A payment to an individual or an agency in exchange for the job or the sponsorship is the definitive marker.
Five questions. An advertisement that fails any of them does not deserve your documents, let alone your savings.
What to do with the next twelve months instead
For a candidate who has just discovered that the route they were counting on does not admit their occupation, the useful question is what to do now rather than what went wrong.
Establish which route could ever apply to you, honestly. Look at the eligible occupation list against your actual qualification, not against your hopes. If nothing matches, the UK is not the near-term answer and knowing that saves years.
Close the qualification gap if you intend to keep the UK as a goal. The route is open at graduate-level occupations, which means the realistic path runs through a qualification rather than through an advertisement.
Build a certified trade if you do not. Trades are what other markets recruit directly, and a certification is portable in a way that hope is not.
Improve your English regardless. The requirement rose to B2 in January 2026 for the main route, and English is the single most transferable asset in every market discussed on this site.
None of that is what an agent wants to sell you. It is, however, what actually moves people.
The sentence worth remembering
If the job is not on the eligible occupation list and the employer is not on the sponsor register, there is no visa — no matter what document you are shown, how professional the office looks, or how much you want it to be true.
