Driving is one of the largest employers of Indian workers in the UAE, and it is also one of the most misunderstood. People arrive expecting one job and find that “driver” covers half a dozen quite different occupations, with different licences, different pay structures, different working hours and very different quality of life.
This article breaks those apart. What each kind of driving job actually involves, what licence you need, how licence conversion works, and what to check before accepting an offer.

The different jobs all called driver
Light vehicle driver. Company cars, staff transport, small vans. Often attached to a business rather than to a transport company, and frequently combined with light administrative errands. Usually the most sociable hours of the driving jobs.

Taxi driver. Operating under a licensed taxi company, typically on a shift system with earnings partly linked to revenue. The regulatory requirements are specific and the training and permit process is run through the operator and the transport authority.
How to Raise a Complaint as a Worker in the UAE: Evidence, Routes and What to Expect
Most workers who are treated badly abroad never complain. Not because they are content, and not because they do not know something is wrong, but because…
Read the Guide →Ride-hailing and limousine driver. Operating for a licensed limousine or transport company that supplies vehicles to app platforms. Note that in the UAE this is generally an arrangement through a licensed company rather than an individual signing up with a personal car.
Delivery driver and rider. Food and parcel delivery, on motorcycles or in light vehicles, employed by delivery companies or third-party fleet operators. Earnings frequently include a variable component linked to trips.
Bus driver. School buses, staff transport and public transport. Requires a heavier licence category and, for school transport, additional permits and checks. School bus work has a distinctive split-shift pattern.
Heavy vehicle driver. Trucks, tankers, trailers and construction plant transport. The best-paid of the driving categories and the most demanding in licensing, experience and responsibility.
Family or personal driver. Employed by a household. Terms vary enormously and this category sits under different rules from ordinary company employment, which is worth understanding before accepting one.
These are genuinely different jobs. An offer that simply says driver without specifying which is an offer you do not yet understand.
Licences: the part that decides everything
You cannot drive professionally in the UAE on an Indian licence alone. You need a UAE driving licence of the correct category for the vehicle.
The routes to one depend on your circumstances. Some nationalities are eligible to transfer or exchange an existing licence without full testing, subject to conditions. Where transfer is not available, the route is training and testing through an approved driving institute, which takes time and costs money.
Two things to understand clearly. First, eligibility rules for licence transfer change and depend on nationality, licence type and current policy, so check the official transport authority position rather than relying on what someone tells you or on an article written a year ago. Second, a licence for a light vehicle is not a licence for a bus or a heavy vehicle — those are separate categories requiring separate training and testing, and holding a heavy licence in India does not automatically translate.
The practical implication for planning is significant. If your offer depends on you holding a UAE licence, establish before you travel who is paying for the licensing process, how long it takes, and what you will be doing and earning in the meantime.
What the work is actually like
Three realities that people underestimate.
Heat. Summer in the UAE is severe, and vehicles standing in it are worse. The UAE operates a midday break rule during the hottest months restricting outdoor work in the middle of the day, and drivers waiting between jobs need shade, water and sense. Heat illness is a genuine occupational risk and it develops faster than people expect.
Traffic enforcement. The UAE enforces traffic rules strictly, with a points system and fines that are substantial relative to a driver salary. Speeding, mobile phone use while driving, and lane discipline offences are all penalised. Understand before you start whose responsibility fines are under your contract — this is a common source of dispute and it should be answered in writing.
Hours. Driving jobs frequently involve long spans, split shifts, or being on call. Ask specifically how many hours, over what span, and what the rest arrangements are, rather than accepting a monthly figure without knowing what it buys.
Safety, and the things that end careers
Professional driving in the Gulf carries real risk, and the drivers who last a long time share a set of habits.
They treat fatigue as a safety matter rather than a personal weakness, and they say so when a schedule is not achievable safely. Long-distance driving in high heat is tiring in a way ordinary city driving is not.
They do not use a mobile phone while driving, including for navigation adjustments and delivery app interactions, and they stop instead.
They keep the vehicle documents and checks in order and report defects rather than driving on with them, because in an incident the condition of the vehicle becomes everyone problem and the driver name is on it.
They understand what to do in an accident: stop, report to police as required, do not leave the scene, and do not agree a private settlement at the roadside.
And they never drive under the influence of anything. The UAE has extremely strict rules on alcohol and drugs, and the consequences for a driver extend far beyond employment.
Reading a driver offer properly
Ask for the answers in writing before you accept.
Which licence category is required, do you already hold it, and if not who pays for and arranges the licensing.
What the salary structure is — basic and allowances separately, since end-of-service benefits are generally calculated on basic pay.

Working hours, days off and overtime arrangements.
Who is responsible for traffic fines, and what happens to a fine incurred while performing the job.
Medical insurance, which is a requirement in the UAE and which the employer arranges.
Figures circulating in advertisements are indicative of what is commonly advertised and are not guaranteed. Pay varies enormously by category, employer and package structure, and only the signed contract binds anyone.
The specific frauds aimed at driver candidates
Driving vacancies are advertised constantly and attract high-volume fraud, partly because the eligibility bar seems low.
The patterns to recognise: a circulating advertisement offering driver jobs with a flat monthly salary and a contact number; a fee for visa processing, licence arrangement or placement; a promise that a UAE licence will be issued without testing for a payment; and the suggestion that you travel on a visit visa and sort the employment out afterwards.
None of these is how legitimate recruitment works. Recruitment charges to workers are restricted, licences are issued by the transport authority under its own process, and a job that requires you to arrive without status is not a job.
Verify the employer independently, verify any Indian agent registration number, insist on a written offer, and never pay an individual for a job. If a licence is promised without testing, you are being told that something illegal will be arranged, which should end the conversation entirely.
Building a driving career rather than doing a driving job
Drivers who do well over ten years tend to do the same things.
They move up licence categories deliberately, since heavy vehicle and bus categories pay better and are harder to fill.
They keep a clean record — traffic points and accidents follow you between employers in a way that is difficult to recover from.
They learn the road network properly, which sounds trivial and is what separates a driver who is trusted with important work from one who is not.
They keep documentation: licence, permits, training certificates, experience letters from every employer. This is what the next employer asks for.
And they think about the next step: fleet supervision, dispatch and transport coordination, driver training, or logistics roles, all of which recruit from experienced drivers who can read a schedule and manage people.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive on my Indian licence? Not for professional work. You need a UAE licence of the correct category, obtained through transfer where eligible or through training and testing.
How long does getting a licence take? It varies considerably depending on whether transfer is available to you and on the category. Ask your prospective employer and check the transport authority for the current process.
Is delivery riding worth it? Earnings often include a variable component, so ask what a normal month looks like, what is fixed, and who bears vehicle and fuel costs. Also weigh the road risk honestly.
Who pays traffic fines? This should be stated in your contract. Get it in writing before you start.
Is a family driver job better or worse? It varies enormously and sits under different rules from ordinary company employment. Establish the terms in writing and understand which framework applies before accepting.

The short version
Find out exactly which driving job you are being offered, which licence category it needs, who is paying for the licensing and how long it takes, and what the contract says about hours, fines and the salary structure. Then never pay anyone for the job itself.
