Cleaning and facility services is one of the largest categories of employment for Indian workers in Saudi Arabia and the one described least honestly in recruitment advertising. Workers arrive without a clear picture of the hours, the accommodation, the physical demand or, most importantly, who actually employs them.
This article is the honest version, written to be read before you accept anything rather than after you have arrived.

Two very different kinds of work share this name
This distinction is the most important thing in the article, because the two sit under different legal frameworks in Saudi Arabia.

Commercial facility services. Cleaning and maintaining offices, malls, hospitals, airports, industrial sites, schools and public buildings, employed by a facility management or cleaning company under ordinary labour law. Your employer is that company; the building is its client.
Working Hours, Ramadan and Leave Under Saudi Labour Law: What to Check
Ask a worker in Saudi Arabia how many hours they are supposed to work and you will usually be told how many they actually work. The…
Read the Guide →Domestic work. Employment in a private household. In Saudi Arabia this sits under a separate framework from ordinary company employment, with its own contracting arrangements and its own official recruitment platform.
These are not variations of the same job. The regulatory position, the working conditions, the isolation, and the routes for raising a problem all differ. If you are being recruited for cleaning work, establish clearly which of the two it is before you agree to anything, and be very cautious of any recruiter who is vague about it.
The commercial facility services industry
Facility management companies hold contracts to service buildings, and they subdivide into specialisms: general cleaning, hospital and healthcare cleaning with infection control requirements, industrial cleaning, hospitality housekeeping, facade and high-rise work, waste management, and grounds maintenance.
Each is a different job. Hospital cleaning carries training and protocol requirements that general office cleaning does not. Industrial cleaning involves chemicals and confined spaces. Facade work is specialised work at height that should never be improvised.
Ask which specialism an offer refers to and where you will be deployed. A prestigious deployment location tells you nothing about your employer terms.
What a working day looks like
Shifts follow the building. Offices are cleaned early and late, malls continuously plus an overnight deep clean, hospitals around the clock. Your hours are set by the site.
Work is scheduled and audited. Facility contracts specify standards and performance is checked, which means routines, checklists and supervisors verifying work — more structured than most people expect.
It is physical in a sustained way. Standing, walking, carrying equipment, repeated bending. The injuries it produces are cumulative rather than dramatic, which is why technique matters.
Some of it is outdoors, in a climate where summer is severe.
Accommodation and transport decide your quality of life
For most workers recruited from India into these roles, accommodation and transport are provided rather than paid in cash, and the differences between employers here are larger than the differences in salary.
Ask, in writing, before accepting. How many people share a room? Where is the accommodation and how far from the worksite? How long is the daily transport journey, and is it inside or outside your working hours? Are meals provided, or is there a kitchen? Is it air conditioned? What transport is available on rest days?
A job with slightly lower cash, decent accommodation and a fifteen-minute transport run is frequently the better job. Two hours of unpaid travel at each end of a shift consumes your life and appears on no payslip.
Your entitlements
Workers in Saudi Arabia are covered by labour legislation, and there is a wage protection system under which employers pay wages through the banking system with payments monitored — which exists precisely so that non-payment becomes visible.
Broadly, you are entitled to a written employment contract, to wages paid regularly through that system into an account in your own name, to limits on working hours with overtime provisions, to weekly rest, to annual leave, to medical cover arrangements, and to an end of service award after qualifying service.
Saudi Arabia has also reformed aspects of the employment relationship in recent years, including matters affecting job mobility and exit arrangements. Because this area has moved, verify the current position through official Saudi sources rather than relying on older accounts, including this one.
Two points to state plainly. Your passport is your own document. And unpaid wages are a matter the labour authorities have mechanisms to address, not a private misfortune to endure.
Chemicals and safety
Cleaning work has genuine occupational hazards.
Chemicals cause skin and respiratory harm, and mixing certain products produces dangerous gases. Use only what you are given, as instructed, with the protection provided, and never mix products. If you do not know what a chemical is, ask.
Slips are the commonest injury, prevented by signage and by cleaning in sections rather than across whole walkways.
Manual handling produces the cumulative back injuries typical of the sector.
Heat, for outdoor and semi-outdoor work in summer, requires hydration before thirst rather than after.
Work at height, including facade work, requires specific training and equipment and should never be improvised. Being asked to do untrained work at height is a moment to stop and raise it.
Report every injury and ensure it is recorded, however minor.
What to establish before you leave India
Everything in writing. Once you have arrived your negotiating position is weaker.
The employer registered name, verified independently as a real company. Whether the role is commercial facility services or domestic work. The job title and site type. The wage and its components. Accommodation, transport and meals in detail. Hours, rest day and overtime. Annual leave and return ticket. Medical cover. The contract duration.
Your Saudi Employment Contract: Registration, Wage Protection and What to Check
The employment contract is the most consequential document in an overseas job, and Saudi Arabia has done something unusual with it: much of the employment relationship…
Read the Guide →And check the recruitment route. For workers in certain categories, emigration from India runs through the government eMigrate system and registered agents with verifiable registration numbers. Ask for the number, verify it, and insist on a receipt on letterhead for any lawful fee.
The frauds aimed at this category
Cleaning and housekeeping vacancies attract the highest volume of Gulf recruitment fraud, because the candidate pool is large and often has the least access to independent information.
The pattern: a circulating advertisement with a flat monthly riyal salary and a contact number; a placement fee, often substantial, described as visa and processing cost; a convincing offer letter; and pressure to pay before the position is lost.
Two variants do particular damage. Being recruited for one framework and placed in another — accepting what you believed was a company cleaning job and finding yourself in domestic employment, or the reverse. And the substituted contract, where terms on arrival differ from what was agreed. Refuse to sign a changed contract and raise it through official channels rather than accepting quietly.
Never pay an individual for a job. Never surrender original documents. Never share an OTP or banking credentials. Verify the employer and the agent independently. If you have already paid someone who has disappeared, report it through the police and national cybercrime channels and keep every message and receipt.
Where the work can lead
The ceiling is lower than in technical trades and it is not flat.
Within facility management, progression runs to team leader, supervisor and site in-charge, and supervisory roles carry meaningfully better terms. Specialised cleaning — healthcare, industrial, facade — pays more than general cleaning and involves training employers provide. Sideways, workers move into stores, materials handling and general facilities roles.
The step that changes the ceiling most is certification. Recognised training in facility management, housekeeping, safety or specialised cleaning converts you from a general worker into a qualified one, and it is what gets people promoted and retained when a contract changes hands.
Frequently asked questions
Is any education required? Usually minimal. Reliability and willingness to follow procedure matter far more.
Will I be employed by the building I work in? Almost never. You will be employed by the facility services contractor.
How do I know if a job is domestic work? Ask directly, and note that domestic work sits under a separate framework with its own official recruitment platform. Vagueness on this point is a warning sign.
What if I am not paid? Wage payments are made through the banking system and monitored. Raise it through the official complaint mechanism rather than waiting.
Can I change employer? Job mobility arrangements have been reformed in recent years. Check the current position through official Saudi sources.

Why the domestic work distinction matters so much
It is worth being explicit about why this article keeps returning to the difference between company employment and domestic work, because the consequences are practical rather than technical.
In company employment you work at a client site alongside colleagues, under a supervisor, on a defined shift, with a roster and a workplace. If something is wrong, there are other workers who see it, a supervisor above you, a client whose premises you are on, and a company with a compliance obligation.
In domestic employment you work inside a private household, frequently alone, with no colleagues and no supervisor. Hours are harder to define, the boundary between working and resting is blurred, and problems are far less visible to anyone outside. Saudi Arabia regulates this category separately and operates an official platform for the recruitment and contracting of domestic workers, precisely because the position is different.
Neither is inherently good or bad, and many domestic workers are well treated. What is dangerous is being recruited into one while believing you are entering the other, which happens and which is why any vagueness on this point from a recruiter should stop the conversation.
If you are considering domestic work, insist that the contract goes through the official platform, understand the stated hours and rest entitlements, and make sure someone at home has your employer details and your contract. Isolation is the risk factor in this category, and staying connected is the practical protection against it.
Keeping a record of your own hours
This costs nothing, almost nobody does it, and it is the single most useful habit available to a worker in this sector.
Keep a simple note — a pocket notebook or a note on your phone — recording each day: the date, the time you left the accommodation, the time your shift started, the time it ended, the time you got back, and whether it was a rest day you were asked to work.
Two things follow from having it. In a dispute about hours or overtime, you can describe a pattern with dates rather than saying that you worked a lot, and the party with records has the advantage. And in your own planning, you will see clearly how much of your day the job actually consumes, including the unpaid travel that never appears on a payslip.
Keep your wage records alongside it and check that any overtime shown matches what you recorded. Discrepancies are far easier to raise in the month they occur than a year later.
The essentials
Establish whether the job is company employment or domestic work, get the employer name and the accommodation and transport details in writing, keep your own passport, insist wages reach your own bank account, never pay for the job, and get a certification once you are there.
