Most advice about moving from India to work in the United Kingdom is written by people selling something. This article is not. It sets out the routes that genuinely exist after the 2025 and 2026 rule changes, what each one realistically costs and takes, and how to decide between them — including the case for concluding that none of them is right for you.
The starting point has to be an unwelcome fact. The UK tightened its work migration rules substantially: the skill floor for the main work route returned to graduate level, salary thresholds rose, the overseas care worker route closed, and the English requirement moved to B2. A plan built on how things worked in 2022 will fail. There are still real routes. There are simply fewer of them, and they are narrower.

The four routes that actually exist
1. Sponsored Skilled Worker
A licensed UK employer sponsors you for a specific job. The job must be at or above the current skill level, pay at or above the applicable salary threshold, and the employer must hold a sponsor licence and be willing to assign a certificate of sponsorship.
This is the main route and it is genuinely open — but only for occupations that clear the bar. In practice the fields where Indian professionals are sponsored in volume are software and IT, engineering, data and finance, architecture and construction professionals, certain teaching subjects, and registered healthcare professions. Note the distinction in healthcare carefully: the care worker route closed to overseas applicants, but registered nursing and the allied health professions did not — those run through professional registration with the relevant UK regulator, which is a separate and demanding process involving qualification assessment, an English requirement and a practical competence examination.

The hard part of this route is not the visa. It is obtaining an offer from a licensed sponsor while living abroad. That is a job-search problem, and it is solved the way job-search problems are solved: a CV in UK format, applications targeted at employers verified on the sponsor register, and a professional network built over months.

A large share of the work that people arrive into in the United Kingdom is not offered directly by the business where the work happens. It…
Read the Guide →2. Study, then the Graduate route
A UK course leads to a Student visa, then to the Graduate route, which permits unsponsored work at any skill level for a further period. Most people use it to find a sponsoring employer from inside the country, which is materially easier than applying from abroad.
It is the most reliable route and the most expensive. Tuition, the immigration health surcharge for the whole period, maintenance funds and living costs add up to a substantial sum, and the Graduate route’s duration has been subject to policy change. Treat it as an education purchased at market price with an employment option attached — not as a visa with a course wrapped around it.
3. India Young Professionals Scheme
A ballot-allocated route giving a period of unsponsored leave with unrestricted work rights. Applicants must be within a specified age band and hold a degree-level qualification, and must meet a savings requirement.
Places are limited and demand exceeds supply substantially, so it is a lottery in the literal sense. But entering the ballot is free, and the expected value of a free entry is never negative. Anyone eligible by age and qualification should enter every time it opens while pursuing another route in parallel.
4. Unsponsored routes for exceptional profiles
Two routes require no employer at all. The High Potential Individual visa is open to recent graduates of universities on a published global list — the list is revised annually and should be checked against the year you graduated. The Global Talent visa requires endorsement by an approved body as a leader or potential leader in academia, research, arts, culture or digital technology.
Both are narrow. Both are also genuinely open to people who qualify and are consistently under-used because applicants assume they are not eligible without checking.
What the sequence actually looks like
For the sponsored route, working backwards from a start date:
- Months one to three. Confirm your occupation is eligible and identify its salary threshold. Assess your English honestly and either book a B2 test or start the Ecctis process if your degree was taught in English. Rebuild your CV in UK format — two pages, no photograph, no date of birth, achievements quantified.
- Months three to nine. Apply, systematically, only to employers on the sponsor register. Track every application. Expect a low response rate from abroad and treat it as normal rather than as evidence of failure.
- On offer. The employer assigns a certificate of sponsorship. You apply, pay the visa fee and the health surcharge for the full period, provide biometrics, and wait for a decision.
- On arrival. Right to work share code, National Insurance number, bank account, GP registration, tenancy, correct tax code.
Realistically, from a standing start to landing, twelve months is a reasonable plan and six months is optimistic.
The money, stated honestly
Rather than quote figures that date, here is the complete list of what must be budgeted, so that nothing arrives as a surprise: the English test or Ecctis assessment; qualification recognition or professional registration where the occupation requires it; the visa application fee; the immigration health surcharge, paid upfront for every year of the visa and for every family member; biometrics and document services; flights; accommodation before the first tenancy; a rental deposit plus first month’s rent together; and living costs for roughly six weeks, because UK employers generally pay monthly in arrears.
Two things should never be on that list. It is unlawful for a sponsor to pass the sponsor licence fee, the immigration skills charge or the cost of a certificate of sponsorship on to the worker. And no legitimate route requires a payment to an agent for a job.
Settlement, and why the timeline is uncertain
The traditional position has been that five years of continuous qualifying residence on an eligible route leads to indefinite leave to remain, subject to an English requirement and the Life in the UK Test, with British citizenship available after a further period.
Right to Work Checks and Share Codes: What UK Employers Must Do and Why It Matters
Every employer in the United Kingdom is required to check that a person has the right to work before employing them. It is a small administrative…
Read the Guide →That framework is under active reform. Proposals published in 2025 would extend the standard qualifying period substantially, with reductions earned through contribution, and would raise the language level required at settlement. Implementation detail and transitional arrangements are exactly what determines whether an individual is affected.
The correct planning response is not to guess. It is to build a plan that works even if settlement takes longer than five years — which mostly means not making irreversible decisions in India on the assumption of a settlement date that has not been legislated in final form.
How to decide whether to go at all
A fair comparison is not “UK salary versus India salary”. It is take-home pay after UK tax, minus UK rent, council tax, transport and living costs, against your current disposable income — plus the value of what you are actually buying, which for most people is the option of long-term residence and the experience itself.
Ask four questions honestly. Does your occupation clear the current skill and salary bar, checked against the official list rather than assumed? Can you reach B2 in all four skills, or are you exempt? Can you fund the full cost without borrowing at a rate that will dominate your first two years? And are you prepared for the possibility that the rules change again while you are in the middle of the process, because they have changed twice in two years?
If the answer to any of those is no, the honest conclusion may be that the UK is not the right destination this year. That is a legitimate outcome of planning, not a failure of it. Other countries have routes at skill levels the UK has now closed, and a plan built on a route that exists beats a plan built on one that does not.
Anti-scam: what to refuse
The tightening of the rules has increased fraud rather than reduced it, because the gap between what people want and what is available is where fraud lives.
- Any offer of sponsorship for an occupation below the skill threshold — warehouse, cleaning, hospitality, general driving, care work from overseas. These cannot be sponsored. The offer is fake regardless of how convincing the paperwork looks.
- Any request for money in exchange for a certificate of sponsorship or a job. Unlawful for the sponsor, and a criminal enterprise if the sponsor does not exist.
- Agents charging for the India Young Professionals ballot. Free to enter.
- Guaranteed visa outcomes. Nobody outside the Home Office decides applications.
- Fake sponsor identities. Check the employer on the published register of licensed sponsors and contact them through a number you found independently, never one supplied in the offer.
- Payment of visa fees through an agent’s personal account. Fees are paid to the Home Office directly through the official application.
- Advice to submit false documents or an inflated salary figure. Deception results in refusal and a long re-entry ban that closes the route permanently.
- Unregulated immigration advisers. Giving UK immigration advice is a regulated activity; check that anyone charging you is authorised to do it.
Never pay money to obtain a job. There is no legitimate version of that transaction anywhere in this process.
The pages a serious plan is built on
- Skilled Worker visa (GOV.UK) — Eligibility, skill level, salary rules and the points system.
- Register of licensed sponsors (GOV.UK) — The definitive list. If an employer is not on it, it cannot sponsor you.
- Eligible occupations and codes (GOV.UK) — Whether your specific job title qualifies, and at what salary.
- High Potential Individual visa (GOV.UK) — Unsponsored route for recent graduates of listed universities.
- Global Talent visa (GOV.UK) — For those endorsed as leaders or potential leaders in their field.
- India Young Professionals Scheme (GOV.UK) — The ballot route. Free to enter.
- Settle in the UK (GOV.UK) — Routes to indefinite leave to remain and the qualifying periods.
What to do this month
Look up your occupation on the official eligible occupations list and write down the code and the salary threshold. Take a free four-skill English diagnostic and find out where you actually are against B2. If your degree was taught in English, start the Ecctis process. Enter the India Young Professionals ballot if you are eligible. Rebuild your CV in UK format. And build a shortlist of twenty employers taken from the sponsor register rather than from a job board.
None of that costs more than an English test, all of it is reversible, and it converts an intention into a plan — which is the difference between the people who make this work and the people who spend two years and a large sum finding out the route was never open.
